Illegal Migration to Europe is at Lowest Level in Five Years

The number of migrants caught at the attempt to illegally enter the EU fell to the lowest level in five years.

According to Frontex, 150,000 illegal border crossings were recorded last year, which is the lowest number since 2013, BBC reports.

Meanwhile, the number of people crossing the Mediterranean and arriving in Italy, where the populist government refused to accept rescue ships, has decreased significantly. While the number of illegal migrants arriving in Spain doubles for the second year in a row.

The number of illegal migrants found in 2018 is 92 percent less than in 2015, when the migration crisis in Europe was at its peak.

Frontex states that the numbers of migrants departing from Libya has reduced by 87 percent during the year, and those from Algeria fell by nearly a half.

The most active route in Europe today is the western Mediterranean one. The number of illegal arrivals in Spain – mainly from Morocco – doubled to 57,000 in 2018.
