Council of Europe Plans to Increase Migrants’ Safety at Sea

The Council of Europe defines specific measures that the international community must take in order to protect migrants, who are currently staying at the humanitarian ships in the Mediterranean Sea. It was said by the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatović on Wednesday, Ukrinform’s correspondent in Strasbourg reports.

Ms. Mijatović noted that the countries must solve structural problems as soon as possible in order to prevent further sufferings of people at sea.

In particular, the matter is in the situation with migrants, who are currently staying aboard the humanitarian ships See Watch3 and See Eye, which are not allowed to enter the ports of the EU countries.

Among the specific measures, Ms. Mijatović offers to overcome discords between the countries in order to carry out rescue operations; to prevent the return of migrants in places where they may face inhumane attitude.

Moreover, the matter is in the cooperation with NGOs, which help migrants, and in provision of assistance to migrants in the access to effective asylum system.
