More than 24,000 migrants arrived in EU in 2017

Nearly 10,800 migrants reached Italian coasts via the Mediterranean Sea in March, while the total number of arrivals in 2017 is 24,000, Frontex reports.

Frontex states that Italy is under migratory pressure.

The number of migrants arriving through the Central Mediterranean route this March increased by more than one-fifth – up to 10,800 persons.

According to Frontex, during the first three months of the year, nearly 24,250 persons arrived in the EU, which is almost 30% higher than the number of arrivals during the same period of 2016.

As for the region of the Eastern Mediterranean, the improvement of weather conditions favoured the increase of the number of migrants arriving on the Greek islands in the Eastern Aegean to 1,690 persons.

It is informed that “there were fewer than 380 detections of illegal border-crossings in the Western Balkans in March, almost 70% less than the previous month.”

It should be reminded that the rescue ships of humanitarian organizations near the Libyan coasts have recently rescued more than 700 migrants from 7 overcrowded boats.
