More than 1,000 migrants died in Mediterranean in 2017

1,089 migrants died in the Mediterranean Sea trying to reach Europe in 2017. 

It is stated by the International Organization for Migration, Anadolu reports. 

Last weekend, 23 migrants drowned near the island of Lesbos. Thus, the official number of persons who died in the Mediterranean Sea since the beginning of the year is 1,089 persons. 

“43,204 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2017 through 23 April, over 80 percent arriving in Italy and the rest in Spain and Greece.” 

It should be reminded that during the rescue operations in 2015 and 2016, more than 400,000 migrants were rescued.
