French mayor fined 2,000 euros for Muslim children comment

A mayor of the southern town of Beziers was fined 2,000 euros for inciting hatred after saying that there are too many Muslim children in local schools, ВВС reports.

Robert Menard is a supporter of the anti-immigration National Front party. On September 1, 2016 he wrote in his Twitter that he was a witness of the “great replacement.” This controversial term is used to describe the eviction of white Christian population by migrants.

On September 5 Menard declared on TV: “In a class in the city centre of my town, 91% of the children are Muslims. Obviously, this is a problem. There are limits to tolerance.”

French legislation prohibits the distinction based on religious beliefs or ethnic origin.

Menard protects his comments: “"I just described the situation in my town. It is not a value judgement, it's a fact. It's what I can see.”

In addition to the fine, the Paris courts also awarded €1,000 “in court costs to anti-racist groups that had brought the case,” BBC reports. Menard is going to appeal against the decision.
