Italy offers EUR 40 million investment to Libya to restrain migrants

Italy offers Libya to make a EUR 40 million deal in order to invest in schools and hospitals in return for Tripoli applying efforts to restrain the flows of migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea, The Times reports.

Italian interior minister Marco Minniti arrived in Tripoli to persuade 12 mayors of the tribes located in the South of the country to accept financial assistance, including to improve security at the border.

According to the UN nearly 100,000 persons crossed the Mediterranean Sea on boats this year to reach Europe, and the overwhelming majority of them landed in Italy.

As of July 6, almost 2,300 migrants died or are missing as the result of the dangerous trip.

It should be reminded that the UK government published the report stating that the naval forces of the EU countries were not able to stop the flow of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea and Operation Sophia must not continue in the current form.
