Migrant arrivals to Italy reduced by 30% since January

The number of migrant arrivals to Italy reduced by 30.13% since the beginning of the year in comparison with the same period in 2016, The Local reports with reference to the information of Italy’s interior ministry.

The Ministry informed that during the period from January to October 2017, 111,397 migrants arrived in Italy in comparison with 159,427 migrants during the same period in 2016.

In October, migrant arrivals dropped 78 percent. Moreover, it is also documented that the inflow of migrants from Libya, which is a key place of departure for migrants, has reduced by 93% since January 2017.

The numbers have significantly reduced since summer, when Italy made the NGOs dealing with the rescue of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea to act in accordance with the new rules.

Moreover, the Libyan coast guard trained by Italy has begun to prohibit the boats to leave Tripoli.

The total of more than 600,000 migrants from Africa, Asia and the Middle East has arrived in Italy since 2014, many of them arrived by sea from Libya.

It should be reminded that Italy has developed the new rules for NGOs rescuing migrants and refugees in the Mediterranean Sea.

It is worth noting that one of the issues causing the concern of the NGOs is the obligation to accept police officers on their ships. The organizations state that it is the violation of the humanitarian principle of neutrality.
